Hemp seed oil is reknowned for its diverse uses, dating back to 6000 BCE and its relation to the cannabis plant, making it a controversial yet highly desired commodity.

Its use can be traced back to ancient China to help cook food. Over the next 8000 thousand years, the true potential of hemp oil was slowly realised, being used in construction, clothing, shoes and eventually to create paper.

Sadly, modern history has not been quite as kind to the humble hemp seed. Its production was made difficult through world wide criminalisation of the plant it’s produced from, significantly altering the availability of the product for medicinal use.

Despite its relation to the drug marijuana, it doesn’t contain any THC, marijuana’s psychoactive component. In fact, most of the contents of the hemp seed oil are essential dietary acids, such as omega 3 and omega 6.

Hemp Oil in the Media

This polarization is only a recent phenomenon. Ancient history shows that cannabis and hemp oil were very common and culturally accepted, appearing in China, the Netherlands, Egypt, India, Greece and even the Middle East.

Around the 1800s people became interested in integrating the plant into western medicine, exploding to over 2000 cannabis medical patents by 1937, encorporating CBD oil, marijuana and hemp seed oil.

However, shortly after the demonisation of hemp began in the media, and we slowly saw the world turn against this widely used plant.

Recently, however, we’re seeing this turn around, with more and more people beginning to accept and embrace the uses of hemp and its products, which in turn has loosened the laws.

One issue facing the hemp seed oil industry is the apprehension of people advertising the products. Arguably, one of the most important advertising platforms, Facebook has banned hemp products from appearing in advertisements. Their explanation for this is that due to their platform being global, they need to have policies that respect every culture and law in the globe, however this ignores the fact that they’re able to target adverts depending on county and as it’s pointed out in various places on the internet, this doesn’t apply to many substances that have differing prohibitions.

The damage of this isn’t only not letting the industry advertise and grow, but also delegitimizes the products as something that should still be sold in the dodgy back alleys of the internet.

Recently, a cheap, low carbon, fire resistant house was constructed in Britain, using the plant and its oils. The sheer versatility of these materials is shown in the fact that everything that went into the house was grown in a tiny 20 acre property. The company, “Practice Architecture” are planning to make a hundred more of these houses to showcase the use of these.
