Piracetam

The peculiarly titled piracetam is a nootropic, known as such for its memory and cognitive enhancing properties. It was developed in Belgium in the 1960s, giving it the prestige of being the first synthetic nootropic created.

What is Piracetam?

Piracetam is a plagiaristic form of the primary, inhibitory neurotransmitter, gamma-aminobutric acid (GABA). As an inhibitor, GABA blocks impulses between nerve cells in the brain, promoting a calming effect on the central nervous system. However, piracetam impacts the brain in a different fashion. Piracetam contributes as a modulator of neuro-protection, neuro-plasticity and brain metabolism. Furthermore, it is commonly marketed as a treatment for myoclonus which is associated with seizure and epilepsy sufferers.

What does Piracetam do?

Piracetam is from the racetam drug family which is a class of drugs or supplements known to improve executive cognitive functions such as memory, motivation or creativity. It has been valued for its use in the treatment of cognitive impairment, stroke, ischemia, dementia patients as well as dyslexic and dyspraxic children, with a limited number of side effects.

The boost to brain function most commonly associated with piracetam is thought to be a result of the cell membranes becoming more fluid. This fluidity facilitates the sending and receiving of signals, giving rise to easier communication. Piracetam has demonstrated the effects of receptor binding and the release of neurotransmitters, showing improvement in cell functioning and the viscosity of cell membranes.

The blood supply, oxygen and glucose consumption to the brain have also been found to be improved with the intake of piracetam. Piracetam is known to activate the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which assists the brain’s flow of blood and thus oxygen levels.

Positive Effects

  • Improves memory
  • Stimulates creativity
  • Augments motivation
  • Improves blood supply to the brain
  • Helps optimise the brain’s consumption of oxygen and glucose
  • Reduces effects of myoclonic seizures

Side Effects

Could include :

  • Shaking
  • Dizziness
  • Nervousness
  • Anger

The muscle spasms associated with myoclonic seizures are involuntary and can be quite ordinary but also severely debilitating. There is evidence to suggest that sufferers of these seizures can have them significantly reduced through consuming piracetam.

Piracetam is being acknowledged as a nootropic which is a source of brain performance enhancement in this article by Reality Sandwich. It compares natural nootropics with synthetic and details the latter’s neuroprotective effects. These can lead to the prevention or delay of cognitive decline over time and lead to enhanced clarity and focus in the short term.

Piracetam Research Studies

2012
Stimulating the Elderly

Several studies have indicated the enhanced membrane fluidity of piracetam users, especially in older test subjects. This was noticeable across a spectrum of impairment in the aged, from the relatively healthy to those suffering with Alzheimer’s disease .

Enhanced membrane fluidity in the brain

Assisting Al Zheimer

This study of Alzheimer’s patients discovered that there was an increase in the uptake of glucose to the brain through targeting inhibitors of glucose transport whilst another experiment found that piracetam exerts a considerable effect on cerebral dynamics, increasing local blood flow and lowering artery contraction.

Results

Brain glucose intake increased. Artery contraction in the brain lowered.

Dyslexia and Dementia

Symptoms of dyslexia and dementia have both found to be minimised through piracetam use. In two separate studies, featuring children aged 7-13 and 8-13 respectively, the groups taking piracetam showed distinct improvements in their reading, comprehension and short-term memory.

Results:

Comprehension, short-term memory and reading skills improved.

Rescuer of Neurons

Another study of Alzheimer’s subjects showed the accumulation of the beta-amyloid peptide in the brain, which gives rise to the death of neurons.

Results:

Piracetam was found to reduce the number of neurons damaged or destroyed through exposure to the beta-amyloid peptide.

Seizure Saviour

Finally, medical reviews into myoclonic seizures found an improvement in symptoms and their severity, with one rare instance of a woman suffering from idiopathic generalised epilepsy reporting a complete cessation to her myoclonus.

Results:

Myoclonic seizures minimised
