What is Shilajit?

Shilajit is a dark, sticky, mineral-organic substance found in mountainous regions, including parts of the Himalayas. It has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine. It is not a single chemical compound: its composition varies depending on where it comes from and how it is collected and processed.

Shilajit contains a mixture of organic substances, including humic materials such as fulvic acids, alongside minerals and other constituents. These ingredients are frequently used to explain its supposed benefits, but identifying a substance in shilajit does not prove that taking it improves health.

Today it is commonly sold as purified resin, powder or capsules and marketed for energy, testosterone, exercise performance and general wellbeing. A small placebo-controlled trial in middle-aged men reported changes in testosterone measurements after 90 days of a purified shilajit preparation. That does not establish improved strength, muscle growth or the same effect from other products.

Quality is particularly important. Raw and commercial products can differ in composition and may contain unwanted contaminants, including potentially harmful metals. Processing, standardisation and credible independent testing matter when evaluating a specific shilajit product.

Key distinction

Purified, standardised shilajit used in a clinical study is not necessarily equivalent to raw resin or an untested supplement sold online. The source, processing and measured composition can differ, so findings from one preparation should not automatically be applied to every product.
